Douro & Dão
Day 1 - Douro Valley
The day starts when we pick you up. After a 1h45 trip, we will arrive at our first destination: the village of Casal de Loivos. Here we will visit an old olive oil mill turned into a museum, where we will learn and understand a bit more about this very important product of the region. This visit ends with a tasting of 3 table wines, olive oil, almonds, and honey.
After the tasting, we will descend to the village of Pinhão to take an upstream 40-minute boat cruise, to enjoy the calm Douro River’s waters and have a better perspective of the great producers located along the shore.
You will then disembark at Quinta de Ventozelo, the Crown Jewel of the Gran Cruz Corporation. Lunch will be served here. Their “Farm to Fork” concept was considered in late 2021 by National Geographic as one of the 3 best Gastronomical experiences in the world. Lunch will be paired with 3 wines of the Estate.
Lastly, we will head for our Porto Wine & final tasting at Quinta Seara D’Ordens. Family-owned since 1792, they are proud to have very exquisite, unique & boutique products, second to none.
After this tasting we will head to the Dão and Quinta Madre D’Água, where we will have diner and stay for the night.
Day 2 - Dão
The next day we will engage in a highly sensory experience, by touring the different places of the farm. Among the highlights of the tour, we have animal interactions: During the winter months we will be able to milk the sheep by hand; goats, Serra da Estrela Mountain dogs, and Lusitano horses (a horse ride tour of the vineyard will be available as extra).
We will visit the vineyard fields, considered the most beautiful of the Dão Region for four years in a row, as well as their olive groves. At the vineyard, we will also visit their cheese factory, a small facility used to produce the Serra da Estrela Cheese, said to be the best cheese in Portugal.
Then, lunch will follow. The starters consist of a tasting of their products: the cheese, sausages, olives, olive oil, and jams. The main course will give us the opportunity to taste a typical meal from the region, with a very modern and original twist. Also, throughout the meal, we will be presented with the wine tasting with different table wines, ranging from the whites to the rosés and reds.
After lunch, we will then head towards the highlight of the trip – the summit of the Serra da Estrela Mountain. Here we will be at the top of Portugal, at an altitude of 1993m above sea level. During the trip, we will also pass some peculiar rock formations and unique landscapes. At the summit, we will visit the small stores, for an impromptu tasting of cheese, hams, and liquors.
This adventure is the perfect weekend escape for a short city and countryside break!
