Chef João Sá Carneiro

João Sá Carneiro is a 39-year-old chef with more than 10 years of experience.

In Portugal he worked in several places, such as the Hotel Vidago Palace, the Hotel Conrad Algarve and Quinta de Ventozelo where he currently manages the kitchen, having achieved there the recognition from National Geographic in November 2021 as one of the worldwide Top 3 Farm-to-Table Gastronomic Experiences.

He spent 5 years in France in places like the Bastide of Saint Antoine, the Hotel Haut-Allier, the restaurant | Salti and the Le Lido restaurant, all Michelin-starred, as well as the Restaurant Michel Sarran in Toulouse and the Domaine de Capelongue in Bonnieux.

His philosophy and approach to gastronomy result in a cuisine of flavor, in which the quality of the product is essential.

Sustainability, organic products, zero kilometer food, zero waste, are some of his constant struggles.

Pinhão butcher meat cheese

The day starts when we pick you up. During the morning we will tour Pinhão, a village of the Douro Valley gathering ingredients for the cooking class that will happen later. At Pinhão we will buy fresh meat, sausages & cheese.

Cooking class kitchen

We then arrive to the Village of Castanheiro do Sul, where we will use the ingredients during our cooking class, led by Chef João Sá Carneiro.

We will cook a traditional meal of the Douro Valley, in a small village home, enjoying the coziness and warmth of the local people.

The meals are always dependent on the season, but you can expect a menu including starters, main course (either meat, fish or vegetarian options) and a desert, all accompanied with wines from the region.

Last but not least, we will take a tour throughout this small village and appreciate their heritage.

After this tour, we will then head to a neighbouring vineyard, to enjoy a final tour and celebrate with a Porto Wine tasting.

Price - Porto Cooking class:

  • €500

    • Price for 2 participants.

    • Additional participants: €250 each.

  • Cooking class with Chef João.

  • Tour and Porto Wine tasting at a local Quinta (Douro Only).

The menus are seasonal and subject to change according the availability of the ingredients and dietary restrictions.

  • 08h30 - Pick-up in Porto meeting point (if requested).

  • 10h00 - Pinhão - Qualifer butcher & Quinta das Carvalhas Winery

  • 11h30 – Arrival to Castanheiro do Sul

  • 19h00 - Arrival back to Porto
