The region where today is the city of Tavira was once influenced by the various peoples who lived there. Among them were the Phoenicians, Ligurians, Celts, and Turdetanos, and later the Romans and Carthaginians. The presence of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in the Algarve, established Christianity in the late third century. The center of Tavira is filled with numerous churches, historical monuments, and traditional buildings. Highlights along the river include: the beautiful Public Garden; the old Roman Bridge and the Republic Square.
For many the most beautiful area of the Formosa ria, it retains admirably its charm and tranquility. From the beautiful walled town of Cacela Velha, one can contemplate the Ria Formosa and the barrier island. Lose yourself in the streets of typical whitewashed houses and have a coffee in one of the several esplanades that you find there. Strolling through the village is an authentic journey into the past: not only because of the architectural work but also because it is closed to vehicular traffic. At Fábrica do Pier there is a restaurant popular for the linguine and oysters. From there you can enjoy the architectural remains left by the Phoenician and Arab Romans. Admire church on the edge of the cliff, enjoy the fort with Islamic origins and visit the parish priest’s house.
The mouth of the Guadiana River divides the Portuguese southeast end of the extreme southwest Spanish. For many years the only Portuguese city that protected the national territory in this area was Castro Marim. Because this period was an era of great changes in the country, a Royal Charter was signed on December 30, 1773, recounting of the creation of a city in the extreme Algarve – so Vila Real de Santo António was born. Nowadays, the city is turned to commerce and tourism, having the privilege of being in the mouth of the Guadiana, next to the beach, the pine forest, and the Sapal Nature Reserve. It preserves, however, the cultivation of vegetables and the fishing of sardines and tuna. In the center of Vila Real de Santo António there are several monuments, among which stands out the Mother Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, built in the 18th century; the Obelisk, ordered to build in the center of the town square, also in the 18th century; and the António Aleixo Cultural Center
